Spy of Richmond-Themed Give-away!

Thu, 2015-04-02 05:27 -- Jocelyn Green

One hundred fifty years ago today, (April 2, 1865) the Confederate government evacuated Richmond, but not before ordering buildings and structures of military importance burned to prevent the Yankees benefiting from them. Unfortunately, the Richmond City Council's order to also destroy all the city's liquor by dumping it in the gutters only served to spread the fire. By the time the Federal troops contained the blazes after arriving on April 3, twenty city blocks had been destroyed. Very few in the Confederacy held out any hope that the South could survive the loss of its capital. Six days after the Stars & Stripes were raised above Richmond for the first time in four bloody years, General Lee surrendered.

My hope is that those of you who have read Spy of Richmond have some sense of the intense and conflicting emotions the citizens must have felt as they watched their city crumble around them. No matter where their loyalties fell, April 2, 1865, was an awful day.

Give-Away!

To commemorate this momentous day, I've put together a Spy of Richmond-themed give-away which I hope will delight anyone who has read this novel.

  Here's what's in the package:

  • A Harper's Weekly sampler set of news from the Civil War. A nod to the journalist hero Harrison Caldwell.
  • The booklet Yanks, Rebels, Rats & Rations: Scratching for Food in Civil War Prison Camps.
  • Ten gorgeous Mort Kunstler postcards depicting the Civil War South.
  • Famous Women of the Civil War card game, featuring Elizabeth Van Lew and other women you may recognize from previous books in the Heroines Behind the Lines series!
  • The novel North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Our heroine Sophie Kent's favorite book, the inspiration for her writing pseudonym of John Thornton, and ... oh wait, I don't want to spoil the end for those who haven't reach it yet.
  • "Harrison's" compact black Bible with "Sophie's" blue ribbon marking Psalm 31.
  • PLUS: Original artwork: my husband drew a picture of Sophie Kent on a page of text from the novel. Suitable for a 5x7 frame, but no mat or frame is included. Rob is also the man you can thank for the maps in the front of each novel!

To enter the drawing, please use the Rafflecopter tool below. You will see several ways to earn points, but you only need to choose one of them to be entered. The more points you earn, the better your chances! a Rafflecopter giveaway A winner will be selected on April 9 and notified via email. Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Glad to hear that, Shirley! Thanks for stopping by!

Submitted by Brittany Keating on
This giveaway looks fantastic. I have loved learning Civil War-era history, ever since I was a kid. My parents always took us on vacations to battlefields and museums, so my interest started early. My favorite book in the Heroines series was "Widow of Gettysburg."

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Thank you Brittany! I had fun putting this together. :) Glad you loved Widow of Gettysburg. I think that novel is very special to a lot of readers.

Submitted by Deanna S on
What a great giveaway package! I've not read your books yet but I think I would really like Spy of Richmond.. dkstevensne AToutlookDotCoM

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Hi Deanna! I hope you'd enjoy Spy of Richmond, too! The books in this series can be read as stand alones, but I think they are much more fun in order. Good luck in the drawing!

Submitted by Rhonda on
Love this giveaway!! Especially the artwork!! We love learning about civil war history and often make trips to Gettysburg to learn more.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Rhonda, yes, it's going to be hard for me to part with the artwork! How wonderful that you get to visit Gettysburg. I've been twice, but I would love to go more. In fact, I'd love to retire there!

Submitted by Marguerite on
Wish Elizabeth had a suiter! Heard Libby Prison was carted to Indiana!

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
You're very close! Libby Prison was broken down, transported by rail to Chicago, and then set up again as the Libby Prison Museum. That is the setting for the epilogue of Spy of Richmond! Unfortunately, they tore it down for good after several years. Some sources say that Elizabeth Van Lew had a suitor once, before the Civil War, but something happened (maybe he died?) and she never sought another suitor after that.

Thank you Susie!!

Thanks Jocelyn. I'm glad you're thrilled. I am too but first I have to get through undergrad. I'm a junior now.

Submitted by Gabrielle on
I'm already thinking of what to do for my undergrad senior thesis. I'm leaning towards doing it on Elizabeth Van Lew and her spy network.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
That would be a great idea for your thesis! BTW, I remember when you were entering college as a freshman! It's been so neat to see you grow in your love of history!

This is a wonderful giveaway. Whenever I finish a good historically based book, it always leaves me wanting to know more about the time period it was written in. (And I love Gaskell books!)

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Mindy, I feel the same way! After I read Philippa Gregory's books, I went on a binge reading nonfiction about Tudor England. :)

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Hi Julie, great to see you here! It's wonderful to hear that your family likes history. There is so much we can learn from those who have gone before us. Good luck!

My husband has a love for American history so I had to show him this giveaway. What a great idea! I need to read this series! It's on my TBR list.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Kristi, I'm tickled that you showed your husband this give-away! It was a lot of fun for me to put this together. I would love for you to read the Heroines Behind the Lines series! Thank you!

Submitted by Brittany El-Shouki on
I'm so happy that I saw this on face book from Laura Frantz. The Civil War is one of my favorite periods in history and this looks like just the thing for me. <3 I can't believe I didn't find out about these books sooner.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Brittany, I'm thrilled we've connected, then! If you love Civil War history, you really will love this series. There's a section in the back of each novel which explains the history behind the story. Enjoy!

Submitted by Cherie Kasper on
I would love to win this contest. I have read one of your books already and totally loved it.

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Thanks Cherie! I'm so glad you enjoyed one of the novels!

Submitted by Jackie McNutt on
All of the history of the civil War is interesting. My late husband's grandfather was wounded July 3 at Gettysburg and I think that family history made me take a greater interest in the whole war. I have always loved history and this war in particular touched families on both sides so deeply. I greatly enjoy your books, you have a gift for bringing stories to life that gives readers a realistic look at the struggles so many faced. thank you for the giveaway

Submitted by Jocelyn Green on
Thank you so much, Jackie. I agree, the impact of this war on both sides was staggering. The Reconstruction Period has been called the second Civil War because of the struggles rebuilding the South. Good luck in the drawing!

Submitted by Chris Batman on
I am so excited for the Spy of Richmond! I have really been looking forward for this book to come out. Heroines behind the lines is one of my favorite series. I have been hooked since Wedded to War. :) Seems like this is the last book promised in the series. Wish you would consider continuing the series.
