Why I Say No to Good Things

Posted by Jocelyn Green on May 19, 2015 in | 13 Comments

Recently, I read something in my gardening book which you natural green thumbs have probably known for eons. I read that in the spring, one of my gardening chores should be to strip off the smallest peony buds, leaving only the largest one to grow on each stalk of the plant. That way, the plant will put all of its energy into one bloom per stalk. So, rather than having several small-yet-somehow-still-droopy flowers, I can look forward to "show-stopping blooms" instead.

This made so much sense to me, on a life lessons level, that I immediately marched outside and set to work pinching...

Seven Courageous Years of MPS "Awareness"

Posted by Jocelyn Green on May 15, 2015 in | 0 Comments

Today, for International MPS Awareness Day, I'm handing the blog over to a mother whose daughter Waverly was diagnosed with the disease seven years ago. Shannon McNeil and her husband Matt learned, not much later, that their son Oliver, also, has the same form of MPS.

Waverly and Oliver have MPS IIIA, or Sanfilippo Syndrome, a recessive autosomal genetic disease. Children with Sanfilippo Syndrome are missing an essential enzyme needed to breakdown and dispose of long sugar chains in the body called mucopolysaccharides. also known as GAGs. Because these sugar chains cannot be broken...

Many stories work best as stand-alone novels, but if you think a series is for you, there are different ways to do it. Here are just a few:

Sequential timeline, same characters. Take the same main characters in different episodes (novels) of a chronological story.

Sequential or overlapping timeline, different characters with some unifying theme. That theme could be occupation, such as The Midwives series by Laurie Alice Eakes, or the stories of siblings, or of close friends. In Carrie Turansky’s Edwardian Brides series, the heroines are all...

Military Marriage: Mission Possible–Staying Together Apart

Posted by Jocelyn Green on May 12, 2015 in Military | 0 Comments

In honor of Military Family Appreciation Month, today we have with us guest blogger Marshele Carter Waddell. She is an author, speaker, and veteran wife of a Navy SEAL. Her book Hope for the Home Front encouraged me so much as a military bride, and I have been so blessed that she also contributed to several of my own books for milwives! We hope this post blesses you!

I browsed the “marriage and relationship” section of my local Christian bookstore.  My heart was heavy, missing my husband…again.  I tilted my head to read the colorful spines of the latest releases...

Truths To Keep Us Afloat

Posted by Jocelyn Green on May 06, 2015 in | 1 Comment

With all the rain we’ve had around here lately, my eight-year-old has been asking questions. “How much rain does it take to make a flood? Do you remember when the streets became rivers? Can anyone die from a flood? How do I not drown?” Patiently, I answer each one, because I remember very clearly when the river seven blocks from our house flooded so severely that we evacuated our home and headed for higher ground. (Our house was spared, thankfully, but thousands were not.)
