Life and Gardens: Not Everything Blooms at Once

Posted by Jocelyn Green on May 30, 2014 in Journal | 2 Comments

After an absolutely wretched winter, I appreciate the new life in my gardens more this spring than I probably ever have. Not everything survived our subzero weather. We lost six Hydrangea bushes, seven Spirea Magic Carpet shrubs, four Boxwood shrubs, and my Dwarf Burning Bush apparently fed the rabbits. But what we have left is very healthy.

The more time I spend working in the gardens to keep them that way, the more I think I could write a devotional book just based on lessons learned from gardening. Jesus talked about being the vine, with us as the branches, and shared the parable...

Posted by Jocelyn Green on May 23, 2014 in Behind the Books | 3 Comments

As we approach Memorial Day, it seems only fitting to remember the family most famous for its personal loss during a war. This family happens to be from my hometown. Perhaps you already know the story--these five brothers enlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor with just one condition. They wanted to be able to serve together. They were granted their request, and served...

Anyone Can Do Freezer Meals: Here's How

Posted by Jocelyn Green on Feb 06, 2014 in Journal | 3 Comments

"So Jocelyn," the television host boomed as she held a microphone under my chin at the International Christian Retail Show. It was my first TV appearance after the release of Wedded to War, and I was prepared to talk about the Civil War, nursing, the writing process, or almost any related topic.  Instead, "I hear you do freezer meals, is that right?"

Slight hesitation. "Yes, that's right."

"Tell us about that!"

The topic struck me as an odd one for the occasion, but I complied, much to my agent's amusement afterward. :) Since then, I've noticed a lot of...

7 Ways to Bolster Your Historical Fiction Research

Posted by Jocelyn Green on Jan 09, 2014 in Behind the Books | 6 Comments

Researching a historical novel is a daunting task, albeit fascinating. But if you know where to look, the process will be more effective, and quicker, too. Other than the two obvious sources of research--books and the Internet (such as digitized collections of primary sources, not Internet chat rooms)--here are seven other ways I have bolstered the research for my own novels. I hope they can be helpful to you, as well.

1) Site visits. Whenever possible, I visit the location I'll be using in my...
